Handmade heavy-duty wooden spurtle kitchen utensil wooden spatula carved from Black Walnut, Cherry, or Maple, rice, and dough paddle.

The One shown is Walnut. I need to add pictures of a Cherry one and a Maple one and I will be doing that soon.

It is 11 1/2 inches long and 3 inches wide. It has a gently curving blade patterned after one of those butter paddles that are so ubiquitous in antique stores. It is carved stoutly so you can use it to mix the stiffest dough. Use it to mix biscuits, scramble eggs, stir a sauce or smack your husband in the forehead for asking “When’s it going to be ready?” one too many times. It also makes an excellent rice paddle for sticky rice. I haven’t made one of these for about 10 years. I found the old template and Gwynne asked me to make some more because a puppy had gotten ours and chewed it up. It was her favorite tool. The one shown is an example. wood grain will vary in color and grain. Finished with beeswax and mineral oil.

Care is easy. Just wash with hot soapy water and towel dry. Don’t put it in the dishwasher and don’t leave it soaking for long periods in the sink. Apply some mineral oil every two weeks or some oil and beeswax mixed. With proper care, your spoon will look and feel good for many years.
